MICE Colombia 2026: por qué los planificadores internacionales eligen Cartagena

Cartagena de Indias has always been one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas. But beauty alone does not make a MICE destination. What has transformed Cartagena into Latin America's most sought-after location for international congresses, incentive programs, and corporate events is a combination of infrastructure investment, improved air connectivity, and a maturing hospitality ecosystem that now meets the most demanding international standards.

The convention infrastructure case

The Centro de Convenciones de Cartagena de Indias, known as the Julio César Turbay Ayala Convention Center, is the anchor of the city's MICE infrastructure. With capacity for up to 3,000 delegates in plenary configuration and 15 breakout rooms, it handles everything from international medical congresses to regional corporate summits. The center's location, adjacent to the historic walled city and within walking distance of the city's top hotels, eliminates the transfer logistics that complicate programs in destinations where the convention center is isolated from the hotel district.

Beyond the convention center, Cartagena offers a portfolio of event venues that no other Latin American city can match: colonial mansions available for exclusive buyout, rooftop terraces with Caribbean Sea views, private beaches on the Rosario Islands, and historic fortresses that have hosted heads of state and global CEOs.

The hotel landscape in 2026

The opening of the Four Seasons Cartagena in 2026 has completed a hotel portfolio that now spans every tier of the luxury market. The city's top properties, Four Seasons, Sofitel Legend Santa Clara, Casa San Agustín, Tcherassi Hotel + Spa, and Hyatt Regency Cartagena, collectively offer over 1,500 rooms in the luxury and upper-upscale categories, sufficient to accommodate groups of up to 800 delegates without mixing hotel properties.

For groups requiring a single-property solution, the Hyatt Regency Cartagena offers 613 rooms and the largest hotel meeting space in the city, making it the default choice for large-scale corporate conferences. For incentive programs where exclusivity is paramount, the boutique properties in the walled city offer full buyout options that create a private-resort experience in a UNESCO heritage setting.

"Cartagena is the only destination in Latin America where you can hold your plenary session in a world-class convention center and your gala dinner in a 400-year-old colonial fortress, and walk between the two."

The cost advantage

Despite its luxury credentials, Cartagena remains significantly more cost-competitive than comparable MICE destinations. A comparable program in Cancún, Punta Cana, or a European city will typically cost 30–50% more than the same program in Cartagena, with no compromise on service quality, accommodation standard, or delegate experience.

This cost advantage is structural, not cyclical. Colombia's lower labor costs, favorable exchange rates for USD and EUR buyers, and competitive hotel market mean that Cartagena will maintain its pricing advantage for the foreseeable future. For corporate buyers under budget pressure, this is not a minor consideration. It is often the deciding factor.

Planning your Cartagena program

The optimal season for MICE events in Cartagena is November through April, the dry season, when temperatures are warm but not extreme and rainfall is minimal. The shoulder months of May and October offer competitive pricing with acceptable weather. July and August are also viable for indoor programs, though the Caribbean heat and humidity require careful program design.

Destinexpo recommends a minimum planning horizon of 12 months for groups of 100+ delegates, and 18 months for groups of 300+. The most desirable venues and hotel properties book out well in advance, particularly for the November–April peak season.
